BRIGHTON, MI — It was a dark day for competitive hobby horsing on Friday as up-and-coming hobby horseman Phillip Ryder tragically broke his leg and had to be put down.
While attempting a standard 2' jump, Ryder reportedly lost his footing and came down hard, snapping his right fibula in the process. Judges initially thought Ryder had suffered a skinned knee, but upon further examination, it was revealed that the flailing hobby horser had suffered a major break and had to be euthanized on the spot.
"Nothing you can do for a good hobby horser but put them down quick," said Cain Marcus, the on-site vet. "Losing the use of the leg causes extreme agitation. Sure, we can fix it, but it's not worth the stress to the hobby horser."
A crowd of dozens in attendance at the Legacy Center Sports Complex described the scene as horrific. "I could hear his bone snap, and I just knew it was coming," said hobby horse fan Mandy Kleiner, 11. "I'm glad my mom made me bring my poncho. It allowed me to cover my innocent eyes."
The National Hobby Horse Association issued a public statement honoring the sudden death of Phillip Ryder: "We will always remember Ryder's tenacity and the shameless way he rode his hobby horse in a sport dominated by teen girls."
Competitive hobby horsing has a longstanding tradition of killing its athletes. Pretending to ride a horse as you execute small jumps or perform horse ballet (known as dressage) takes a surprising toll on the people who participate in the sport.
At publishing time, NHHA President Donald Norris confirmed that Phillip Ryder's casket would be transported to his funeral by a hobby horse-drawn carriage.
