WASHINGTON, D.C. — WNBA legend Elena Delle Donne announced her retirement yesterday, the former MVP leaving after a decade-long career which saw her score six points.
Fans gathered to celebrate Delle Donne's remarkable accomplishments on the court, which included a torrid stretch during her prime where she scored four points in just five years.
"The numbers speak for themselves," said former coach Amy Bohannon. "Elena was one of the best to ever do it. Six points, and at least two of those were scored in the correct goal. Just let that soak in for a moment. What an incredible story she wrote. We are just lucky to have been witnesses to it."
Delle Donne retires as the all-time leading scorer for the Washington Mystics, responsible for nearly half of the team's points over the last ten years. "Watching Delle Donne was riveting," said longtime fan Denise Harmon. "You knew that any given night, there was a real possibility she could actually get the ball in the hoop. It was really, really improbable, but not impossible, and that's what made it so exciting. She will be missed."
At publishing time, the WNBA had retired the jersey number "6" in Delle Donne's honor.
