WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to growing concern across the country about rampant crime in the nation's capital, President Donald Trump vowed to drastically reduce the number of criminals in Washington, D.C., by sending members of Congress home.
Sources within the Trump administration cited data from an internal study that indicated the absence of Congress would likely reduce crime in Washington by more than 50%, leading the president to take bold action by removing the city's biggest and most dangerous criminals.
"We're getting the worst people out of the city," Trump told reporters. "It's so sad to see what's become of this wonderful city. Gangs of violent offenders who disregard our laws and seek to hurt people on a daily basis by committing horrible atrocities, robbing people and endangering the lives of innocent citizens. And I'm just referring to the people who work in the Capitol building. It's true. They're a bad bunch, and we're going to fix the problem."
Trump said he expected conditions in the capital and throughout the country to be noticeably better once Congress was shipped out of town. "Everyone will be much safer," he said. "With every member of Congress rounded up and sent back where they belong, our people will be able to walk down the street again without being afraid of what's going to happen. We're going to deal with the nastiest lawbreakers in the country first, and that means the U.S. Congress."
At publishing time, Trump had ordered the military to use large cargo planes to transport the dangerous lawmakers out of Washington.
