U.S. — When Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26, executives from Warner Bros. Pictures expressed confidence that the film would show the world that girls can be just as good as boys in everything except ticket sales at the box office.
Producer James Gunn said he was excited to show the world that a movie starring Supergirl can be "pretty good" and "kind of fun" even if it won't be in any way as successful as a movie starring a male character people actually want to see.
"She's just as great in all the ways that don't matter as much," Gunn said. "At first I didn't want Supergirl to be the second film in the new DC Universe since she's a character almost no one cares about, but then I remembered I'm supposed to think supergirls are just as good as supermen. The release of this film is a triumph in every aspect, except for getting a successful financial return on the studio's investment. This movie will show all little girls everywhere that they can do anything boys can do... except be a smash-hit at the box office."
Moviegoers were reportedly confused by Supergirl because it's about a superhero who isn't Superman but is instead a girl who is kind of like Superman but isn't because she's a girl.
"Who doesn't want to see a movie about a hard-drinking girl who kind of acts like a superhero some of the time?" said Chelsea Gore, mother of three. "My kids want to see Superman throw a guy through a building. And this is the next-best thing... kind of. Not really, but yeah."
At publishing time, Warner Bros. Pictures had assured audiences that the next film in the DC Universe, Man of Tomorrow, would have a lot of men in it.
