LOS ANGELES — Matt Gutman, Chief National Correspondent for ABC News, became emotional Wednesday when, during a news segment, he teared up while calling Hitler's Mein Kampf both personal and touching.
At the time, Gutman was supposed to be delivering a report on the 50 million people who died in World War II.
"I think many of us were surprised by just how personal and touching Mein Kampf could be. While simultaneously blaming Jews for all of society's ills, he also expresses an incredible love for his homeland that is to be admired," Gutman said while discussing his motives for authorizing the construction of death camps. "In all honesty, at times Hitler had me rooting for him."
During the broadcast, Gutman became teary-eyed while quoting the following passage of Hitler's work:
The great leaders of Jewry are confident that the day is near at hand when the command given in the Old Testament will be carried out and the Jews will devour the other nations of the earth.
"It's just so raw and emotional," he said. "And kind of beautiful, if you think about it."
Mein Kampf is an autobiography and political manifesto written by Adolf Hitler in 1925. It provides historical insight into the man who would later be responsible for the systematic murder of approximately six million Jewish people and the instigator of a war that would claim tens of millions of lives. It's also a remarkable love story, according to Gutman.
At publishing time, Matt Gutman was reinstated after posting an apology to X, formerly Twitter, in which he described the whole incident as a simple misunderstanding. "I was just drawing a contrast between his killing those millions of people and how sweet he could be. My bad."
