BURBANK, CA — Due to some clever thinking by producers of Walt Disney Pictures' live-action Moana remake, the $150 million film was able to save big on its budget by just getting Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson an $8 wig from Spirit Halloween.
"It's helpful to cut corners wherever we can. Plus, it looks great," said film producer Bobby Hornblower. "I thought that people were going to be so busy looking at the fake CG beach that we wouldn't need to spend a lot on a wig. Good thing there was a Spirit Halloween open down the street."
The film's director was reportedly less than thrilled to put The Rock in a cheap wig from a Halloween store, but then the production somehow couldn't afford to film on a real beach either. "That thing was stiff and unnatural," director Thomas Kail said. "I had to get the animators to work on it in post so that it would move in the wind. IN hindsight, we should've just made him wear a hat."
Despite apprehension from the film crew, The Rock reportedly loved his wig. "It's like I have hair!" he was heard saying. "Is this what hair feels like? I totally forgot. It's great!"
A report from Variety indicated that co-star Catherine Laga'aia, who portrays Moana in the film, was unable to take The Rock seriously during his performance because of the wig. Her scenes had to be shot separately against a green screen so she could act with a straight face. Later, in postproduction, the two actors were brought together to create the illusion that they shared a scene.
At publishing time, Walt Disney Pictures authorized the sale of "the wig worn by The Rock" for $5 million.
