EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol by team trainers after he gave a coherent answer during an after-practice interview.
According to team sources, medical personnel overheard Winston offer an interview response in the form of a complete sentence containing a single train of thought, prompting an immediate evaluation for concussion.
"I just understood everything Jameis said. Something isn't right," said the Giants' head trainer Adam Bennett. "Get the team doctor, and hurry. Jameis! Hey, buddy. Where are we right now?"
"We're at the Giants' practice facility, Max. Why do you ask?" replied Winston.
"Oh no, that was coherent too. We're in trouble here," whispered Bennett to a fellow trainer. "Let's get you to a dark room to lie down, alright, Jameis?"
The training team guided Winston to an exam room, where team physician Dr. Scott Rodeo was waiting. "Alright, let's see what we've got here. How you feeling, Jameis? Can you tell me what you've been doing today?"
"Fine, doc. Just wrapped up practice, everything went pretty smoothly," responded Winston.
"Whoa. That... made perfect sense. Grade 3 concussion, people. Let the coaches know right away," said Dr. Rodeo.
At publishing time, the team had expressed optimism about Winston's condition after he told medical staff that he was just a few dozen crab legs away from being ready to suit up again.
