MASON, MI — Democratic candidate Brad Winkler vowed to "Free Palestine" as he launched his campaign for the District 32 Sanitation Board this week.
Standing in front of a wastewater treatment facility covered with "Justice for Gaza" banners, Winkler assured supporters that he would use every ounce of his authority as a member of the Sanitation Board to further the cause of the Palestinian people.
"My opponent wants to focus on sewer line maintenance, turning a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian people," said Winkler. "While he's talking lead levels, tens of thousands of Gazans are living in an open-air prison. The people of District 32 deserve a Sanitation Board member who will stand up for those who otherwise would never have their voices heard in our sewer system."
According to campaign materials, Winkler's platform included ending U.S. military aid to Israel and the immediate establishment of an independent Palestinian state. "I was wanting to know how Winkler would address the sewage backing up into my basement, but this is interesting too," said local homeowner Greg Sanders. "He's got some fresh ideas about how to get the Sanitation Board behind globalizing the intifada. This is really hitting home."
At publishing time, Winkler had announced that his first initiative would be to eliminate sewage "from the river to the sea."
