SILOAM SPRINGS, AR — Services at a local Lutheran church were reportedly disrupted this week when the church organist added a blistering 10-minute organ solo to "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."
"This is for you, Luth!" organist Dave Barnhouse reportedly cried out as he let out the pipes with a clash of keys ascending upward, climbing ever higher until it sounded as though it was beating on the door to the Kingdom of Heaven itself.
"Ow, my ears!" said one child in attendance. "Daddy, I'm scared!"
The epic solo reportedly overwhelmed the congregation by both its power and length. According to witnesses, some members rocked out, swaying to Barnhouse's improvised melodies, while others took cover behind their pews.
But all, whether they liked it or not, had their faces melted before it. The solo itself took on a life of its own, becoming its own mighty fortress; a fortress of rock.
"I thought it was very moving," said a church deacon. "The organ looked like it was smoking after he finished playing. If it had been an electric guitar, it would have been devil music, certainly. But it was an organ, and it was playing our most beloved hymn, so that makes it OK."
At publishing time, the church organist had received a stern talking-to by the pastoral staff.
