LAKE FOREST, CA — According to local man Todd Lyons, there's simply no room in the budget for his family to tithe as they are already having to spend $30,000 a year on travel baseball for their 10-year-old son.
"I'm afraid there's simply no room in the budget for giving to the Lord," Lyons reportedly told church leadership. "You have no idea how much travel baseball costs. It's big commitment we simply have to keep to ensure our son continues getting to hit a ball with a stick. Thank you for understanding."
According to the Lyons, tithing isn't the only thing affected by travel baseball, as the team has games nearly every Sunday. "Travel baseball takes a lot of time. We're in a new town basically every weekend during the season, so we just don't have time for church," said Patricia Lyons, Todd's wife. "We were in Vegas last weekend. It was kind of like a mini-vacation, and you don't need to go to church when you're on vacation. I think that's in the Bible somewhere."
On several occasions, church members have reportedly reached out to the Lyons family to check on their spiritual well-being and see if there' is any way to help ease the burden the family voluntarily put on themselves. However, this only served to offend the Lyons family.
"Ugh, I just felt so judged when Amy called and said that she missed seeing me at church," said Lyons. "Don't they understand there could be a scout at any game, and missing even one could ruin little Calvin's chance of going pro?"
At publishing time, Todd Lyons had expressed regret after all the hard work and sacrifice they put into travel baseball resulted in his son being drafted to the Dodgers.
