BOSTON, MA — In a heartbreaking turn of events, the first thing seen by a blind child who had his sight restored was a Boston Red Sox game.
Seven-year-old Liam Makowski underwent an experimental stem cell procedure at Boston Children's Hospital, which miraculously resulted in a total recovery of sight. Tragically, when Makowski opened his eyes, a Boston Red Sox game was playing on his hospital room's television.
"It's awful. Liam won't even open his eyes now," said nurse Kaitlyn Mason. "Two minutes of his sight restored, and Liam said he's seen enough. It's pretty bad out there."
Makowski's parents tried to change the channel as quickly as possible, but they were too late. "Why, Lord?" cried Makowski's father, Roger, watching as his son winced in pain. "Why the Red Sox? It's so painful to watch. Hasn't my son been through enough?"
At publishing time, hundreds of other people throughout the Boston area had reportedly requested voluntary sight-elimination surgery after being exposed to the Red Sox.
