AUSTIN, TX — Texas state representatives finally reached a quorum Tuesday and adopted a congressional redistricting map in the shape of the Whataburger logo.
A motion to adopt the new district map passed 91-59, with only three Democrats crossing party lines to side with Republicans. The partisan vote was reportedly made possible thanks to a last-minute sponsorship by Whataburger.
"This map ensures proper representation of our constituents by reminding them of the great affordable taste of Whataburger," said Speaker Dustin Burrows before taking a bite of his Triple Meat Whataburger. "The districts are also mostly even, for the most part."
The map, which was set to go into effect just in time for the congressional midterms, features a prominent but unmistakable "W" that appears layered as if several congressional districts are stacked on top of each other. Each district spans the entire width of the state, from east to west.
"These are the largest districts ever, so we're going to have way fewer representatives in Congress, but it'll be worth it because they'll all be Republican," said Texas Governor Greg Abbott. "It also really makes me want a patty melt. Excuse me."
At publishing time, inspired by Texas, the state of Louisiana held an emergency legislative session and voted to redraw its congressional districts in the shape of a Waffle House sign.
