LEE'S SUMMIT, MO — The dreams of spring were in the air during last weekend, as one local suburban dad gently consoled himself next to his dormant lawnmower in the garage.
After a surprisingly mild Saturday, Jonathan Hughes paid a visit to the dark corner of his garage where his lawnmower remained in hibernation for the cold winter months, lovingly petting it as he promised it that they would soon be reunited.
"Soon," Hughes whispered to the lawnmower. "Soon, it will be spring. The grass will be growing again, and we will once again feel the sun on our faces and the wind in our hair as we sail like free men across the back yard at five miles per hour. It may seem cold today, my friend… but the day is coming. Soon."
Hughes and his trusty lawnmower had weathered the cold months of dormant grass, narrowly surviving on a diet of football and nights sitting around the firepit, but he knew that a new beginning was about to dawn when he would push his lawnmower out from the garage like King Théoden from the gates of Helm's Deep. "Sleep now, my loyal companion," he said in a hushed tone. "Before long, we will ride again."
At publishing time, Hughes had gone out to the back yard with a tape measure for the third time today to see if the grass had grown any more since this morning.
