LOS ANGELES, CA — In a special joint announcement with legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel revealed that he will be writing the screenplay for a new sequel to Paramount Pictures' The Godfather.
With the movie industry struggling, Paramount opted to return to what they consider a "sure thing" in the form of The Godfather Part IV as re-envisioned by the former host of Win Ben Stein's Money.
"Kimmel once told me he liked The Godfather, so I think he's the perfect man to write a new chapter in the Corleone family saga," said Coppola. "Also, I really didn't want to do it."
The studio reportedly wanted to follow in the footsteps of Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema, which tapped another late-night host, Stephen Colbert, to write a new Lord of the Rings film. Executives think Kimmel is just what one of American cinema's most revered properties needs.
"I love The Godfather," Kimmel said through tears. "I'm excited to be a part of this new chapter in its saga."
Though the plot of The Godfather Part IV is officially being kept under wraps, Kimmel did spoil the whole thing in an interview with Variety. "Why does it have to be a Godfather? Why can't it be a Godmother? That's what I asked myself when writing this film."
The new film will reportedly see the return of Andy Garcia as Vincent Corleone, now running the family business. In the opening sequences, he will step down from his role to spend time making pizza in Italy, creating a power vacuum that causes members of the family to turn on each other. Who will live and who will die? That is the question audiences will ask themselves as Vincent's estranged daughter, Maria Mancini Corleone, a tough-as-nails police detective, joins the fray in a daring bid to meet street warfare with lawfare.
The Godfather Part IV is expected to hit theaters in the winter of 2028.
At publishing time, producers had started to regret hiring Kimmel as a writer after pages kept being delivered to them soaked in tears.
