NEW YORK, NY — During a Tuesday evening taping of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert announced he would rather the show not air at all than have to interview a black woman.
Due to the FCC's "equal-time" rule, Colbert's interview with senatorial candidate James Talarico could not be aired on television unless the comedian agreed to also interview his opponent, Representative Jasmine Crockett. Colbert, however, resisted the call to fairness and said he would rather die than interview a black woman.
"I'm just so surprised that CBS would ask me to talk to a black woman," Colbert said during an unhinged 7-minute rant on his February 17 broadcast. "I would literally rather be unemployed than be forced to speak to a black woman. Here I stand, and can do no other."
Colbert announced he would most definitely be dying on this hill, alerting CBS that he had chosen to go off air rather than speak to a black female. "This is my line in the sand. It's called the 'Black Female' line," Colbert said. "Sure, it would have been easier to just have her on and talk to her, instead of pulling my show. But, she's black."
At publishing time, Colbert had soberly reminded his audience that he only had a few more months to dodge interviewing black women before his show would be gone for good.
