SAN JOSE, CA — After years of therapy, a local man finally achieved a major breakthrough in determining the source of his trauma: watching Don Bluth's The Secret of NIMH from 1982.
William Strauss suffered an emotional breakdown just over three years ago. He lost his job, his wife, and his kids in the ensuing chaos, and at 54 years old, he was forced to move back home with his parents. In hindsight, it was all because he watched The Secret of NIMH.
"The Secret of NIMH scared me to death as a kid, but I guess I just sort of repressed it until it came out in a violent outburst at work," Strauss said. "One day I was fine, and the next day I began seeing creatures with strange, glowing, golden eyes of dread."
Strauss consulted with several therapists before finally being treated by Dr. Derek Jacobi, who diagnosed him quickly. "Oh, this is a classic case of Don Bluth Disease. You watched The Secret of NIMH, didn't you?" Dr. Jacobi said during their first appointment.
Dr. Jacobi was able to diagnose his patient so quickly because he had been traumatized by The Secret of NIMH himself. "It's part of why I went into therapy," he said. "I needed to find a way to get over the terrible images I saw. It still keeps me up most nights, even to this day. It was Bluth. It was all Bluth."
Now, Strauss and Dr. Jacobi were planning to write a book together in the hopes of spreading the news of Don Bluth Disease to the rest of the world. "I still need evidence to back up my hypothesis, but I'm pretty sure trauma was invented when Mrs. Bisby visited The Great Owl," Dr. Jacobi said.
At publishing time, Jacobi had one final message for the public: "If you're living with trauma, it's not your fault," said Strauss. "It's Don Bluth's fault."
