WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the heels of the public announcement that the couple was expecting their fourth child this summer, Second Lady Usha Vance gently informed the Vice President that they would not be naming their baby boy "Thomas Bombadil Vance."
Sources said that, though the vice president remained excited for the arrival of another son, he was understandably disappointed to have his first choice for the baby's name vetoed by the second lady.
"This is the third time he's failed to convince her to go with that name," one source said. "He tried with the first two boys, but to no avail. Usha rules it out every time. It's a shame, because JD is just in love with the name. He said he's dreamed of naming his son after Tom Bombadil his whole life. Unfortunately, it just seems like it's just not meant to be."
According to witnesses who overheard the conversation, Mrs. Vance would not be swayed. "I love you, sweetheart, but no, absolutely not," she reportedly told her husband. "My feelings about that name have not changed. You know that. I know you've always loved that character, but I've only ever seen the movies, so I have no idea who that is. I'm sorry."
While the vice president's staff refused to comment directly, a brief related statement was later made. "The vice president is thrilled that he and Usha will soon welcome another addition to their family," said Press Secretary Taylor Van Kirk. "He is confident that they will be able to come up with a name for the baby that they will both love."
At publishing time, Vance's staff had confirmed that the couple was eager for the birth of Aragorn Elessar Vance.
