WASHINGTON, D.C. — Just days removed from a controversy that arose after he shared an image on social media that drew allegations of blasphemy, President Donald Trump complained that he was being crucified for comparing himself to Jesus.
The president made the claims while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, saying his post, which many said depicted him as Jesus Christ, led to him being persecuted, ridiculed, and falsely accused by religious leaders.
"Nobody has ever been mocked and scorned this badly," Trump said. "It's been horrible, really. I feel like I've been beaten up, tied to a post, and just whipped mercilessly. That's what it feels like. I only posted a picture — a beautiful picture, I must say — of me as a doctor, taking care of people and making them feel better. If that means I'm like Jesus, then I guess I am. But the treatment I've received from the religious leaders has been terrible. I'm being crucified over here. It's sad."
The president explained that there would be a reward for his followers who remained faithful. "You want to be on the right side, believe me," he said. "There are some who may turn away. Kristi Noem, I heard that she denied me three times the other night. It's really bad to do that. The people who truly love me will keep my commands. And they will be rewarded when I come back again."
AT publishing time, Trump had assured his supporters that he would go and prepare a place for them at Mar-a-Lago and return on a day they do not expect to take them back with him.
