LONDON — Harsh justice looked set to be carried out soon, as actor-comedian-podcaster Russell Brand was found guilty in a UK court on charges of raping while not Muslim.

Brand faced allegations last year of sexual misconduct brought by multiple women and, now convicted, faces the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence for failing to be a Muslim while committing rape.

"Everyone knows the rules," said Mr Justice Joel Bennathan. "One simply cannot perpetrate such horrible acts as these on innocent victims in the United Kingdom without first being a Muslim. This is the law of the land here, as you surely must be aware by now, Mr. Brand. I'm afraid that, due to your lack of being a Muslim, we are left with no choice but to hand down a severe punishment. If you had just been a Muslim when you had done these things, we would simply look the other way, of course."

Following the conviction, Brand admitted his grievous error in judgment. "It's very clear to me now where I went wrong," he told reporters as he gave a brief statement. "In hindsight, I should have converted to Islam before I did any raping. That would have made this a very different situation. Had I been a Muslim at the time that I did these things, I'd be a free man today. To be fully honest, I probably wouldn't have even been charged. Oh well. Live and learn, right? I'll know better next time."

At publishing time, Brand had petitioned to officially change his name to "Muhammad Brand" in hopes of receiving a more lenient sentence.
