CHINO HILLS, CA — While other churches featured topical sermons related to Father's Day, the pastor at Reformed Associate Presbyterian Assembly Church chose to just preach the same passage he was going to preach anyway, just as he does every Sunday.
"Today I will be preaching our 573rd sermon on our series in Romans," said Pastor Duncan James to his congregation. "Please, open your Bibles to Romans chapter 1."
"Oh yeah, and Happy Father's Day," he added.
James defended his choice of sermon, saying he had planned it in advance thirty years ago, and that God had it planned in advance before the foundations of the Earth. "I see little reason to change our in-depth study through Romans just because it happened to coincide with the Father's Day holiday," he said. "At Reformed Associate Presbyterian Assembly Church, we do things on God's timing, not man's."
According to sources, wives and children in attendance were disappointed in the sermon, not because of any perceived theological error, but because they knew they'd have to make up for the lack of attention drawn to Father's Day. "I like it when churches and other things make a big hullabaloo about Father's Day or Mother's Day because it takes some of the pressure off," said Dylan Fitzpatrick, a 16-year-old. "Now I have to buy him a gift or something. Ugh!"
At publishing time, Pastor James had confirmed he would be preaching his 576th sermon in Romans on the July 4th weekend, and hoped to get to Romans chapter 2 by Thanksgiving.
