JERUSALEM — The disciples of Christ, distraught and crushed by the events of Friday, began to wonder what Jesus could have possibly meant when he said, "They will kill me and in three days I will rise from the dead."
Gathered together in the Upper Room, the remaining apostles debated what, if anything, to make of Jesus' cryptic statement that he would be handed over to the chief priests, crucified, and rise again in three days.
"I just can't make heads or tails of it," said Andrew, sighing deeply. "What could it all mean? Jesus said he would be turned over to the chief priests and scribes, which is exactly what happened. Jesus said he would be condemned, scourged, and then crucified, which is exactly what happened. I only wish Jesus had given us some clue about what might happen next."
Despite their best efforts, the disciples could not make any headway deciphering Jesus' repeated statements that after being killed, he would rise from the dead in three days. "Jesus really left us hanging," said the Apostle James. "No hints, no nothing about how this is all going to play out. We're at a real loss."
At publishing time, the disciples had begun to debate what Jesus might have meant when he said that they would be handed over to councils, flogged in synagogues, and hated by all nations.
