SPACE — On Monday, the Artemis II crew set a new record for the farthest away from Earth humans have ever gone. And as mission specialist Jeremy Hansen stared at the far side of the moon, with the Earth a distant crescent, one thought crossed his mind: He was pretty sure he had left his oven on.
"Oh no," he was heard telling mission control. "I can't believe I forgot to turn the oven off."
Hansen explained that he had last used his oven to bake a frozen pot pie the day before launch, but he could not recall ever having turned the oven off after consuming his 7-oz Swanson meal. And now, being 252,760 miles from his oven, there was little he could do.
"I'm so forgetful," Hansen continued. "I'd forget my head if it weren't attached to my body. Ah, well, what can you do?"
The crew had begun the multi-day journey back to Earth, and while most of the crew were worried about the risky reentry, Hansen was most focused on whether or not his house could burn down.
"If someone could go over to my place and make sure the oven is off, I'd appreciate it," Hansen said in a video message from the spacecraft on Tuesday. "Sorry about that. I'm Canadian."
At publishing time, Hansen had another startling moment when he was fairly certain that he had left his garage door open.
