U.S. — Just in time for Easter, Amazon announced that it was rolling out a special limited-time "Everything-40%-Off-Except-The-Three-Things-You-Want" sale.
This is Amazon's biggest sale on items you don't want, ever. Compared to other Amazon sales, where items are added over the course of the promotion, this sale actually features a total site-wide discount on absolutely everything except the three things you actually want.
"Wow, everything I don't want is so cheap!" said avid shopper Margaret Opel. "Ooo, a Star Wars stand for the Echo Dot I don't own. Neat!"
Amazon reported site traffic up over 40% following the launch of the "Everything-40%-Off-Except-The-Three-Things-You-Want" sale, as customers frantically searched for items they actually want to see if they were on sale. Sales were also up over 25% across all departments despite none of the sale items being something anyone wants.
Amazon spokesman Andy Jassy sat down with Forbes to explain the strategy behind the sale. "It really doesn't matter what we put on sale. If it's discounted, people will buy it," he said. "But if we sell the items people actually want, they won't come back to the site later to check and see if it's on sale, which it never is. Get it?"
At publishing time, Amazon had sent alerts that there were limited-time "lightning deals" on the least desirable items.
