FRANKLIN, TN — Listeners were in for an unexpected treat last night, as Christian radio network Air1 unveiled another commercial that made sure everyone who heard it would know that they don't have any commercials.
One listener estimated that he had heard the commercial multiple times in just one hour, with the ad repeatedly stressing the importance of supporting Air1 due to its reliance on pledges rather than advertising revenue.
"We don't waste time with ads. Instead, we bring you nonstop positive, uplifting worship music, uninterrupted by annoying commercials," the ad said before seamlessly transitioning into a four-minute appeal for listener donations.
Listeners from across the country expressed confusion over the station's commitment to avoiding ads while running frequent pre-recorded messages about how the station doesn't run commercials. "It seems a little weird," said longtime listener Brent Carter. "They just played an entire segment about how other stations interrupt your music with paid sponsorships, but then asked me to become something called a ‘Hope Partner' for $40 a month. It reminded me of a commercial, only with more guilt."
An Air1 spokesman insisted these spots were not advertisements, but rather "listener-powered encouragement breaks" and clarified that their non-commercials about how they don't have commercials would continue airing after every three songs until the station's monthly pledge drive.
At publishing time, Air1 aired a new recorded spot assuring listeners that they would never be pressured to buy anything, followed by an urgent request for money to keep them from going off the air forever.
