NASHVILLE, TN — Prison officials admitted they were unsure how to go about executing a woman who was currently being kept alive by a ventilator that is plugged into a power outlet in the wall.
After surviving two botched lethal injections, convicted murderer Christa Pike is now in critical condition and is solely being kept alive by a machine that breathes for her, which is powered by a standard 120-volt power outlet in the wall. Prison officials, who ordered the medical interventions that are keeping her alive, are baffled as to how they could execute the vulnerable death row inmate now.
"That machine appears to be breathing for her and preventing her court-ordered death," says Warden Bill Myles Lee. "We're analyzing the situation and trying to figure out the best way to proceed. It's quite the conundrum."
Prison officials from Riverbend Maximum Security Institution were up all night brainstorming different ways they could execute someone who is plugged into a ventilator. Still, they kept coming up against the logistical roadblocks.
"We could bring in an electric chair, but it's too large for the hospital room," explained the Warden to gathered media outlets. "And we would also have to rewire the electricity in the room, which would cost millions of taxpayer dollars. Then we had the idea of maybe bringing in some cheap rope for a good old-fashioned hanging, but the room isn't tall enough, and there aren't any good support rafters to hang from in there. Ugh, if only she weren't plugged into that ventilator that's keeping her alive."
At publishing time, prison officials had commissioned an independent committee to perform a review of the situation but said that the committee won't have any recommendations for the executive board to review for at least 6-8 weeks.
