IRVINE, CA — The pastor of Lord's Vine Church has reportedly taken the lead drummer from their praise team aside and formally warned him to stop adding the drum fill from Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" to every worship song.
"We are praising God, not rocking out to Phil Collins," Pastor Jim Gray reportedly told the drummer. "Look, I know it's iconic, but it just doesn't fit with 'Amazing Grace', okay?"
The pastor and the drummer reportedly spoke for over an hour on the matter.
Church members are reportedly concerned that worship songs will fail to send the same chills down their spine without Collin's iconic drum fill, however. "I wish the pastor would just leave well enough alone. Isn't worship about being inspired and feeling good? Phil Collins makes me feel that," said church member Arnold Thurmond.
The drum fill from "In the Air Tonight" is frequently cited as among the most iconic. And for the drummer at Lord's Vine Church, the drum fill was perfect for kicking things up a notch during slow songs like "How Great Thou Art" or "It Is Well With My Soul".
At publishing time, the praise team's drummer was good to his word. He heeded the pastor's words and removed the drum fill from "In the Air Tonight" from all worship songs, instead replacing it with the drum fill from The Beatles' "Come Together".
