U.S.—Netflix has taken heavy criticism for committing the sin of cultural appropriation of cheesy Hallmark Channel Christmas movies.
The accusations of cultural appropriation came as Netflix users noticed an increase in the number of corny, formulaic holiday films on the service. It was obvious, some say, that Netflix had appropriated the idea for the cheesy films from Hallmark Channel, whose culture of pumping out dozens of refreshingly cheesy Christmas movies goes back years.
"Stay in your lane, Netflix!" said one angered Hallmark viewer protesting outside Netflix's offices. "Hallmark Channel has a rich legacy and storied culture of uninspired, paint-by-numbers Christmas films, and you can't just come in here and colonize their monopoly on Christmas films like this."
"Our cheesy Christmas movie culture is not your Netflix content!" another protester cried. "When we want to watch a jaded businesswoman meet a charming man in a small town to rediscover the meaning of Christmas -- and maybe romance along the way -- we turn to Hallmark, not your culturally appropriated trash."
The protest ended early, however, when Hallmark fans had to rush home to catch a rerun of Christmas in Graceland.
