U.S. — Former National Security Advisor John Bolton pleaded guilty in federal court this morning for failing to store stolen classified documents in his garage behind a Corvette.
Bolton faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $2.25 million, as prosecutors said Bolton willingly and knowingly stored highly classified documents outside of his garage, where all classified documents should always be stored.
"These national security documents were of an incredibly sensitive nature, and could have been devastating if they fell into the wrong hands. For Bolton to not leave them strewn about the garage behind a classic car is unconscionable," said prosecutor Warren Patterson. "With Bolton's experience as a National Security Advisor, he knows full well that the only way to properly store such materials is in an old Home Depot box thrown haphazardly next to a car. Bolton's level of disregard for this standard is disgusting, and we are therefore seeking the maximum penalty."
Defense lawyers stated that Bolton simply could not beat the charges and that he accepted full responsibility for not tossing classified documents into his garage. "Our client knows he made a grave error in judgment," Bolton's attorney said outside the courthouse. "In hindsight, he should have tucked these documents behind a vintage Corvette, left a few scattered on a workbench, and maybe even misplaced a folder of CIA agent names under a pile of extension cords. He understands now that this was unacceptable."
At press time, Bolton had pleaded guilty to a separate charge of failing to store classified material on a private, unsecured email server.
