PENSACOLA, FL — Local man Steve Jacobs reported receiving a hospital bill this week that contained nothing but a photo of a sad-faced Mr. Monopoly with his pockets turned out.
"I don't know what this means, but it can't be good," Jacobs said. "We had to take our daughter to the ER recently, and I knew it was going to be a little pricey, but I don't know what to make of this bill. Is this a new thing hospitals are doing? Admittedly, it's cute, but it's more than a little disconcerting."
Jacobs said the trip to the emergency room for his toddler daughter's high fever turned out to be nothing to worry about, and says he's grateful for the access his family has to high-quality medical treatment. But the arrival of this Mr. Monopoly bill has thrown him for a loop, and he admits he's a little nervous to call the hospital and ask for an explanation.
"He's just standing there, looking sad and turning out his pockets," Jacob said. "I understand the reference, but I'm worried about its meaning. Are we going to be broke like this guy? What does it mean?"
At publishing time, Jacobs reportedly called the hospital and was told that if he failed to pay the bill, the next one would be a picture of Mr. Monopoly being told to "go directly to jail."
