PEORIA, IL — County officials said they would not stand in the way after local man Christopher P. Smith putting his children up for adoption after they told him the 1989 "Weird" Al Yankovic film UHF wasn't funny.
"They deserve it," Smith said, according to court documents.
Smith's children, ages 11 and 13, allegedly had the privilege of watching UHF over the weekend but found themselves groaning loudly within the first five minutes, inviting the wrath of their father.
"They said it was 'cringe' and then asked to watch KPop Demon Hunters instead," Smith said, recalling the incident. "I had never been more disappointed in my children. In fact, I no longer consider them 'my' children. Not after this."
Social workers visited the home after a noise complaint from neighbors, but everyone involved eventually agreed that Smith had done the right thing.
"I often side with the children, but they got what they had coming," said Sheila Werther, a caseworker assigned to the family. "He's well within his rights to kick these kids to the curb. They're lucky he's not doing anything worse, honestly."
"How can you not laugh at the Wheel of Fish? Such awful kids," the children's mother reportedly said. "We've failed as parents."
At publishing time, Smith had put in a request with a local orphanage looking for replacement kids who appreciated the comedic genius of UHF.
