WINNEMUCCA, NV — According to witnesses at a local pet store, a father was about to make a fatal mistake after his daughter asked him if she could have a bird.
"Daddy, can I have a bird?" the man's daughter asked. "I'll take good care of it and love it forever. Please, please, please."
The father, described as a 35-year-old male with cargo shorts, appeared to reason within himself. Witnesses say he initially shrugged off his daughter's plea but seemingly became convinced she needed a bird after she told him it was her only dream in the whole world.
"I won't ask for a horse anymore, Daddy, because I'll have a bird," she said.
Employees reportedly shared their concerns with the father, explaining that a macaw parrot is not a beginner bird and requires a lot of care. You have to really know what you're getting into. However, the warnings didn't sink in. The dad, witnesses said, was focused on just one thing.
"On sale, eh?" the father said. "That's a much more affordable price point for my daughter's love."
Fathers, say experts, are notorious for falling for the trap of a pet macaw. "They appear to be quite an investment on the surface, which scares most fathers away, but they also feed into every father's deep-seated desire to be a pirate," professional mystery shopper Emily Laurel said. "They also don't take up much space, which is a plus. But oh, the noise. It never stops. For decades."
At publishing time, the man's daughter had already begun asking for a horse again.
