YAZOO CITY, MS — In an effort to drum up more excitement and engagement from the members of its congregation, a local church announced that the traditional weekly offering would be replaced with a 50/50 raffle.

The congregation of Eighth Baptist Church was abuzz on Wednesday, following the posting to the church's website notifying everyone of the change, with the pastoral staff excitedly revealing that the first 50/50 raffle would take place this coming Sunday.

"Come on, let's win that pot!" said Bernice Smith, an elderly woman who has faithfully attended Eighth Baptist for the last 43 years. "After all this time of putting money into the offering plate week after week, it's exciting to finally have a chance to get in on the action. If everyone chips in like they're supposed to, we could be looking at splitting a pretty sizeable pot. Let's go, baby!"

Pastor Doug Lepperts said the hope was that the opportunity to come away with half of the proceeds would entice more congregants to try their luck and toss some money the church's way. "This could really be a game changer," Lepperts said. "We have our faithful givers, of course, but letting one lucky attendee in on half of the pot could be exactly the thing we need to generate more interest in giving to the Lord's work. Come on and join the fun, folks. Give generously to God, and who knows — half of everyone's hard-earned money could go home with you."

At publishing time, Pastor Lepperts had announced that a portion of the church's half of the raffle would go toward the construction of a new casino wing of the sanctuary.
