ATLANTA — Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today that they are confident this year's flu shot will be highly effective against last year's strain of flu.
"We're happy to report that the new flu vaccine formulation shows better-than-ever protection against the H3N2 strain that dominated last year," said CDC Director Erica Schwartz. "This is one of the most effective vaccines we have ever developed. The results against the 2025 flu are truly incredible."
When asked about the flu viruses currently gripping the country, Schwartz clarified that those would be addressed by next year's formulation. "We're already hard at work on that," she said. "We are cautiously optimistic that next year's vaccine will also be highly effective against this year's flu strains. The CDC is staying on top of everything that already happened."
A CDC fact sheet emphasized that the current flu shot meets or exceeds all standards for effective treatment established for the previous flu season. "Individuals who receive this year's vaccine are significantly less likely to contract the flu that ended several months ago," the document stated. "The data is clear."
At press time, CDC officials had confirmed that they had promising early results on a new COVID vaccine that would be highly effective against the Omicron variant from four years ago.
