KYIV — President Donald Trump scheduled an emergency trip to Ukraine to ask President Zelenskyy for American missiles.
Trump appeared before the Ukrainian Parliament to ask for the high-tech U.S. weapons systems, making the case that Ukraine does not need to send its own men to fight America's war — it only needs to send America the tools to do the job.
"We need the American missiles that only Ukraine can provide," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. "President Trump is not asking for a handout. We are simply asking for the U.S. to be able to obtain U.S. weapons to fight the evil Iranian regime. We will fight our own war, but no one else outside of Kyiv has that level of advanced weaponry. The message is clear: we need some of our stuff back. Please."
Zelenskyy reportedly expressed hesitation about becoming entangled in a distant foreign war, noting that Ukraine should focus on problems closer to home. "We sympathize deeply with the American people," Zelenskyy said. "But Ukraine cannot be expected to bankroll every conflict on earth. We must first maintain our own stockpile of American missiles before allowing America to have access."
At publishing time, Trump had reportedly asked the Ukrainian government for $50 billion to aid in the war effort against Iran.
