WORLD — With new trade policies officially going into effect, officials warned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Donald Trump's Canadian tariffs were expected to have a devastating impact on the curling broom industry.
"America's economy may not recover from this devastating blow to the sport of curling," said economist and political strategist John Deleck. "What Trump is doing with these tariffs may very well cause the country to collapse."
The American people have reportedly begun stockpiling curling brooms ahead of a perceived decline in supply as a result of the tariffs. Leading curling broom resellers say they will have to reduce their inventory because of the tariffs, and have already begun raising prices to account for the lower supply.
Professional curlers have begun developing alternatives to curling brooms such as curling sticks and curling spoons. But it's not expected that any substitutes will be approved by the International Olympic Committee. As a result, American curlers would be unable to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
"Trump will come to regret this recklessness," said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "Americans will suffer terribly as a result."
At publishing time, the Canadian economists had also warned America that Trump's tariffs would also affect the price of dry, tasteless doughnuts from Tim Hortons.
