DENVER, CO — Southwest Airlines announced this week that it was now offering nonstop flights from the Denver airport to downtown Denver.
"It's a long distance, but traveling by plane makes it easier," Southwest spokesman Matt Bowen said. "The trek from downtown Denver out to the airport takes people way too long by car. We're offering daily routes now so travelers can get to and from the two locations in less than the usual 18 hours it takes to drive."
For years, travelers in the Denver area have struggled to travel from the city center out to the airport, which some estimate is 460 miles away from downtown. City officials hoped these flights would help residents access the airport in under five hours.
"We know the two locations are ridiculously far apart," Bowen said. "Why they decided to build the airport 15 hours away from the city center is a question that has been lost to antiquity. But now, after a short three-hour flight, you can go from downtown Denver out to the airport and still have time left in your day to fly somewhere else."
Residents expressed excitement and a little confusion. "I just wish they'd build an airport in Denver that was, you know, in Denver," Denver resident Marcus Brady said.
At publishing time, Southwest said it was also considering introducing nonstop flights between terminals at the Atlanta airport.
