DENVER, CO — Struggling to find alternative options on the mound that could potentially give the team a better chance to win a game, the Colorado Rockies asked the Girl Scout who threw out the first pitch if she could give them nine innings today.
With another difficult season nearly at the halfway point, the Rockies staff reportedly saw something they liked in the young girl's ceremonial first pitch, quickly pulling her aside to find out if she felt like taking the mound to make today's start against the Boston Red Sox.
"We liked the velocity and command we saw out there," manager Warren Schaeffer was heard telling the girl. "What do you say? Want to suit up for the game and see what you can do against the Red Sox? We could really use your help."
The Girl Scout, 9-year-old Maddie Gray, agreed to take the Rockies up on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "Sure, mister!" she replied excitedly. "I was just here to throw out the first pitch because I sold the most cookies this year, but I'd love to get out there and give it a go."
Rockies pitching coach Alon Leichman was pleasantly surprised by Gray's pitch arsenal, which reportedly includes a 4-seam fastball, a cutter, a knuckle curve, and a circle change-up. "As soon as she stepped on the mound, we had that sense of hope again, like we were in this game," said Leichman. "I don't know what her plans are for the rest of the summer, but we sure could use her for the rest of the season."
At publishing time, Gray had struck out the side, though pundits were quick to point out that this was against the Boston Red Sox.
