HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. kicked off his new cooking show with a reminder for viewers at home to always be sure to cook raccoon to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Kennedy's new initiative, titled The Real Food Show, aims to help Americans get back to eating natural, unprocessed foods, such as wild squirrel and armadillo.
"You've got to cook the leprosy out," explained Kennedy, holding up the dead raccoon. "That's why with all small woodland creatures, it's important to hit the proper internal temperature. By the same token though, you don't want to overcook it. There's nothing worse than tough badger meat, I'll tell you that right now. Now, who's ready to make some raccoon risotto?"
The debut episode also featured Kennedy demonstrating how to properly field-dress a nutria and three easy weeknight recipes using only ingredients that could be gathered from the shoulder of a rural highway.
"People spend way too much money at the grocery store," Kennedy said while stirring a cast-iron skillet with a stick he had just picked up off the ground. "Nature has already stocked the shelves. You just have to be willing to go to the storehouse."
At publishing time, Kennedy had announced that he would also be opening a new line of his very own "Roadside-To-Table" restaurants.
