EGYPT — Pharaoh's magicians, though able to match the initial signs of power presented by Moses and Aaron, admitted this morning that they could not replicate the magic of Moses' color-changing coffee mug.
Like Aaron, the magicians had managed to also turn their staffs into snakes, though the snake made by Aaron's staff swallowed up their snakes. However, when Moses demonstrated how his mug changed colors when he added coffee, the magicians had no answer.
"We are sorry, oh great Pharaoh. We have done all we could by our secret arts, but we cannot match the wonder of this mug," said the magicians. "It is beyond all human reckoning. The changing from blue to red before our eyes when he puts the coffee in, the giraffe — this magic is beyond us."
The magicians reportedly grew even more distressed when the coffee cooled, and the mug turned blue again, only to return to red when Moses poured himself a refill.
"He has changed it again," whispered one trembling magician. "The same thing. In exactly the same way. A greater power is before us, oh Pharaoh."
Pharaoh ordered his sorcerers to remain in the throne room until they could produce a color-changing mug of their own. After several hours of incantations, the magicians had turned a mug into a snake, which Pharaoh said was not what he had asked for.
"The snake thing is impressive. We all agree on that," Pharaoh told his increasingly desperate advisers. "But I cannot drink coffee out of a snake. I want the color-changing mug."
At publishing time, Pharaoh had hardened his heart after learning the mug was hand-wash only.
