WASHINGTON, D.C. — Global tensions over tariffs continued to rise amid the ongoing trade war, as the White House announced that General Tso's Chicken would be renamed General Don's Oriental Chicky Nugs.
The renaming of the popular Chinese dish was only the latest move made by the Trump administration to increase pressure on the Chinese government to reach a new normal in international trade relations, with Trump pledging not to budge on the new name.
"They're sweet, they're savory, they're spicy… and now they're named after me, Donald Trump," the president told reporters aboard Air Force One when the news broke. "I don't know who General Tso is, but he does not deserve to have this delicious chicken named after him. He was probably a horrible communist. From now on, General Tso's Chicken will now be known by the new — and really quite fantastic, I might add — name of General Don's Oriental Chicky Nugs. They're tasty, they're orange, and like me, they're everyone's favorite."
Chinese restaurants across the United States received orders to rename the dish on their menus, effective immediately. "We've already been inundated with orders," said Liu Huang, owner of Golden Dragon Yum Yum Chinese Food in Anaheim, California. "Everybody want to eat General Don's Oriental Chicky Nugs tonight."
At publishing time, the Trump administration planned to add to its demand that Crab Rangoon be renamed Vance Rangoon.
