LOS ANGELES, CA — Nearly 65 years after The Howdy Doody Show was canceled, NBCUniversal announced plans to bring back the beloved character in a dark, gritty reboot.
Children in the 40s and 50s who grew up watching The Howdy Doody Show are now between the ages of 60 and 90, and the character of Howdy Doody has to grow up with them, producers said. Enter a tough-as-nails Howdy Doody, a puppet reanimated by dark magic, who lurks in the shadows of Doodyville, punishing evildoers for their dark deeds.
A poster featuring the show's famous opening line, "Say kids, what time is it?" features a grim Howdy Doody ready for vengeance.
"The geriatric demographic is largely ignored in Hollywood, and we aim to change that by bringing back one of their beloved childhood characters in a dark and gritty reboot that world-weathered baby boomers can appreciate," said producer Stan Wilkins.
The bold new film was described as a "Neo-Western Horror Epic" that explores what happens when a community of marauders terrorizes a small town.

At publishing time, NBCUniversal had announced that it had tapped horror director Kane Parsons to bring Howdy Doody to the screen for a new generation.
