U.S. — What has been a rollercoaster of a season continued to generate controversy, as WNBA players accused fans across the country of yelling ugly racial slurs at them such as "Go Caitlin!" and other horrifying epithets showing support for rookie phenom Caitlin Clark.

The disturbing allegations arose following a tumultuous week that included Clark suffering a black eye at the hands of an opposing player in an incident that some fans believed to be an intentional act of violence. Other players across the league responded by declaring fans of Caitlin Clark racist for being fans of Caitlin Clark.

"I'm hesitant to even repeat the horrible things I've heard fans yelling at games," said Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington, who unintentionally aimed her fingernails directly at Clark's eyeball. "Awful slurs like ‘Go Caitlin!' and ‘Way to go, Caitlin!' are just the tip of the iceberg. Super racist."

The WNBA issued a statement in response to the controversy. "We are aware of the shameful conduct allegedly perpetrated by Caitlin Clark's fans," the statement read. "We do not condone such deplorable behavior and publicly condemn any hateful actions of people who attend our games. Cheering for Caitlin Clark and wanting other players to stop poking her eye have no place in the WNBA."

At publishing time, hundreds of Indiana Fever fans had reportedly been banned from attending any future WNBA games after having the gall to hold up a large hand-painted banner that read "We Love U Caitlin" at a game.
