FRANKLIN, TN — One local celebrity decided to get into the Halloween spirit a couple of weeks early this year, as financial guru Dave Ramsey terrorized his neighborhood by creeping around in an adjustable-rate mortgage costume.
After dressing up as the most horrifying thing he could imagine — a predatory ARM — Ramsey hid in the bushes near his home, jumping out periodically to scare neighbors with the potential of increased rates and higher monthly payments as they walked by.
"Boo! I'm here to make your monthly mortgage payment significantly higher!" Ramsey was heard shouting at one young family as they strolled past the bushes. "Your future financial security could be severely damaged by me! Wooooooo!"
Though the couple and their children recoiled in horror, it wasn't known if that was because of Ramsey's depiction of an adjustable-rate mortgage or just due to being alarmed at him leaping out from the bushes. "Yeah, we weren't expecting that," said Jeff Grable, the husband and father who lunged to protect his wife and children from potential danger. "Dave does this every October, though. Last year, he dressed up as a giant credit card and chased people down the sidewalk, shouting at them about living their lives under the crippling burden of debt. It's scary every time."
Ramsey then returned to his hiding spot, prepared to chill passersby to their very bones with the prospect of entering into a mortgage contract without the safety of a fixed interest rate.
At publishing time, residents of the neighborhood had turned the tables, frightening Ramsey by decorating their homes with payday loan forms and HELOC applications.
