SAN BERNARDINO, CA — An attack ad against a Republican candidate reportedly had the opposite effect when it convinced a local man to vote for the Republican.
Local Democratic Party strategists reported feeling crestfallen after learning that their aggressive attack campaign had only served to sway more votes toward their Republican opponent.
"We said he wanted to clean up the streets and prosecute criminals," said local Democratic Party campaign manager Alicia Mullins. "I don't understand why it's driving people to him."
Following the release of the ambitious attack ad campaign, which featured public billboards, radio spots, and television ads, Republican candidate Arthur Straight had surged over 40% higher in the polls.
"I love everything they're saying about this guy," said local voter David Miles. "I'd never even heard of this guy, but I'm definitely voting for him now. I never would have realized it was an attack ad if you hadn't told me."
In addition, Republicans who agree firmly with Straight's take on the issues were reportedly heavily motivated by the attack ads to show up and vote for him in record numbers.
"I was already a fan, but now I'm definitely going to make sure I don't forget to vote," said local voter Trent Howard. "I showed one of the ads to my liberal parents, and now even they're coming around to him."
According to sources, attack ads against Republican candidates across the country were backfiring enormously because they only served to expose neutral voters to the conservative common sense ideals of the candidates while simultaneously energizing the Republican base — the polar opposite of their intended purpose.
At publishing time, a new attack ad featuring the mass deportation of illegal aliens set to heartfelt music further boosted support for the Republican candidate.
