California, at the behest of Governor Gavin Newsom, recently passed two bills that would limit free speech and censor comedy in the Golden State.
One of the laws prohibits any individual or group, such as The Babylon Bee, from distributing "materially deceptive content" about candidates or elected officials around election time. Who decides what is materially deceptive? Officials of the same mind as Gavin Newsom of course.
The other law would require online platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and X, to label or even take down such "materially deceptive content" effectively making these social media companies deputized censors for the state.
We at The Babylon Bee are suing California, but just in case we lose, we started making California-compliant satire. Let us know what you think in the comments below:
