NAPERVILLE, IL — Dozens of neighborhood trick-or-treaters were left completely unprepared Tuesday evening after local resident Burt Ostler unexpectedly opted for "trick" when presented with the classic Halloween ultimatum.
The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. when a group of local children held up their plastic buckets and uttered the standard greeting. Rather than reaching into a bowl of full-sized candy bars, Ostler reportedly smiled menacingly and chose to catch the candy-seekers unawares.
"I'll take the trick," Ostler announced, folding his arms and leaning against his doorframe.
Witnesses reported that the children froze in disbelief. Despite having given hundreds of neighbors the choice between a trick or a treat over the years, no one had ever chosen trick. They stared at Ostler with their mouths open, unsure of what to do next, before fleeing in terror.
"We didn't have a trick planned. I mean, we did give 'trick' as an option. We weren't prepared," 8-year-old Liam Parker said. "The bucket is just for candy. I wasn't ready for this."
Watching the children bolt in panic, Ostler threw back his head and laughed. "Oh-ho! Come back when you're prepared with real mayhem!"
At publishing time, Ostler remained stationed on his porch, eagerly waiting for the next group of children to test.
