TULSA, OK — Eyewitnesses at a local Teppanyaki steakhouse sat with growing anticipation on Thursday after observing head chef Hiroshi Tanaka smiling slyly as he clearly had something clever planned for the onion he had in his hand.
Patrons seated around the table reported that Tanaka had spent the prior five minutes hitting his spatula and fork against the grill surface before abruptly shifting his attention to a nearby onion. Witnesses said he picked up the vegetable and held it in suspense, maintaining a slight grin that strongly suggested he was about to do something awesome.
"You could tell right away that this wasn't just standard food preparation," Hibachi patron Mark Henderson said. "The way he held that onion made it clear that something remarkable, and possibly pyrotechnic, was about to take place."
The diners gathered around Tanaka's cooking station could barely contain their excitement, knowing that they were about to enjoy a festival of sight, sound, smell, and taste.
"He might even throw something into my mouth," Henderson said. "I love it when things are thrown at me during a meal."
At publishing time, the patrons were leaning forward in hushed silence, waiting for what would the most exciting five seconds of their week.
