CHARLESTON, SC — Local grandmother Peggy Hartfield apologetically put one scammer on hold this morning so she could answer a call from a different scammer.

After spending five minutes on the phone with a man claiming to be from her bank, Hartfield asked if the scammer could wait a moment while she answered another call from "Scam Likely."

"Oh, I'm sorry, young man, I've got another call coming in, and I don't want to keep them waiting," explained Hartfield. "Let me just put you on hold, and I promise I'll come right back. Whoops, wrong button. There it is. Hello? Is this 'Scam Likely?' What do you need, honey?"

Hartfield's family had tried on several occasions to explain that she doesn't need to answer the phone for scammers, but to no avail. "She just says it's not good manners," explained Hartfield's daughter, Amanda. "I tell her that scamming old people also isn't good manners, but mom says that's no excuse. She doesn't even fall for their tricks, but she'll keep answering their phone calls until her dying day."

At publishing time, Hartfield had also put the second scammer on hold to answer a call from "Political."
