SACRAMENTO, CA — A local 16-year-old saw her dreams crushed Thursday after bringing her vehicle to a complete, zero-mile-per-hour stop at a stop sign, a move that instantly disqualified her from receiving her license.
DMV official Greg Thomason immediately marked an automatic fail on his clipboard as the sedan's speedometer hit zero.
"It was a clear hazard to the flow of traffic," explained Thomason. "She came to a dead stop, checked both ways, and waited her turn. I've been a driving instructor in this state for 12 years, and I haven't seen such dangerous, reckless compliance since a kid tried to use a turn signal in 2018."
The teen, Maddie Stark, expressed confusion over the failure, noting that she was simply following the instructions printed in the state's official driver's handbook.
"I brought the vehicle to a rest behind the limit line like it said," Stark said. "The instructor just sighed, shook his head, and told me that if I wanted to drive in California, I needed to learn how to roll through the turn at fifteen miles an hour while paying close attention to never come to a complete stop. Apparently, that's just how it's done in California."
At publishing time, Stark was scheduled to retake the exam next month, having spent the afternoon practicing her "California Roll" in an abandoned shopping mall parking lot.
